Minn. man sentenced in Hinesburg overdose death
A man from Minnesota has been sentenced to nearly three years in prison for giving Oxycontin to a Hinesburg man who overdosed on the drug in 2007, Chittenden County State's Attorney T.J. Donovan said today.
Phat M. Nguyen, 35, of St. Paul, Minn. was convicted and sentenced in Vermont District Court in Burlington to serve two years and 11 months in prison, Donovan said.
The conviction stemmed from the Jan. 20, 2007 overdose death of Daniel Bendz, 30. According to the Hinesburg Police report, Bendz, who was celebrating his 30th birthday, drank a large amount of alcohol and took two or three 80 mg Oxycontin tablets furnished by Nguyen.
Bendz was taken to Fletcher Allen Health Care, but died the next day, police said.
"This sentence sends a message that people need to be responsible with the regulated drugs they are prescribed," Donovan said in a news release. "If you allow others to ingest your drugs you will go to jail."
